Ufopa researcher develops study that can treat stroke using neural stem cells
Therapy under development has the collaboration of a researcher from the University of California and can be tested on humans in up to three,
A study using stem cells to treat strokes, initiated at the Federal University of Western Pará (Ufopa), based in Santarém, is in the testing phase and, if the results are positive, could be a source of hope for millions of people. The study is being developed by Dr. Walace Gomes Leal, a neuroscientist, in partnership with researcher Paul Lu from the University of California, San Diego.
According to the researcher, people who suffer a stroke lose millions of neurons during the injury. The aim of the research is to transplant a fibrin graft with neural stem cells so that new neurons can be formed and replace those that were lost, forming new brain circuits.

Healing may come from the forest: medicines from the Amazon flora that protect the brain
By Walace Gomes Leal:
The Amazon is a natural wonder covering approximately 5 million km2 – an unparalleled source of biodiversity, accounting for half of the world's tropical forests. It has existed for approximately 55 million years and occupies approximately 50% of Brazil's territory.
There is no other tropical forest in the world with such exuberance and grandeur of plant and animal species. The Amazon flora is unparalleled with around 60,000 plant species, which corresponds to 10% of all plants on the planet. It is incredible to say that in just 1 km2 of Amazon rainforest you can find more than 1000 types of plants.
Considering the unparalleled Amazonian flora, there is immense potential for the development of medicines derived from the forest, known as phytotherapeutics, or even isolated active ingredients (phytopharmaceuticals). Phytotherapeutics are defined as medicines obtained exclusively from plant raw materials (RDC 148 of 16-03-2004).
